The False Narrative of the “Unarmed Jew”
The Dangerous Lie That Jews Are Defenseless
Recently, a Jewish influencer on a podcast shared a “revelation” about carrying a firearm daily after moving from New York to Florida.
The way the podcast framed this revelation suggested the influencer had uncovered something previously unknown, as if the rest of the Jewish community had yet to realize the obvious need for self-defense.
By presenting Jews as generally unarmed, the commentary spreads a narrative that is not only inaccurate but also dangerous, signaling vulnerability to those who would do harm.
Why This Matters
Statements like “Jews don’t carry guns” or “most Jews are anti-gun” are more than inaccurate—they are signals to those looking to do us harm.
Aggressors notice patterns, pick up cues, and exploit perceived vulnerability. Every time influential voices broadcast Jewish defenselessness, they inadvertently invite violence rather than deter it.
The reality: many American Jews, quietly and across denominations, are armed, trained, and prepared.
Responsible firearm ownership is not anomalous; it is increasingly common. Yet media and influencers often ignore this, framing the community as passive or naïve.
“The assumption that Jews only now realize the need for self-defense ignores proactive steps taken by countless members of our community over the years.”
Jewish Awareness Isn’t New
Some commentators have noted that vigilance and self-defense are not new discoveries.
Framing the community as suddenly awakened misrepresents reality. For centuries, Jews who recognized historical and contemporary threats have quietly prepared and protected themselves and their families.
“Framing Jews as suddenly awakened misrepresents reality. Many have long understood the dangers facing the community.”
This mirrors the false framing of the “unarmed Jew”: the narrative that Jews are passive is flatly wrong.
History and Scripture Support Self-Defense
Jewish self-defense isn’t just modern—it’s rooted in history and scripture.
From the Maccabees to judges and community leaders defending their people, our tradition emphasizes protecting oneself and one’s community.
The Torah upholds guarding life and property as a moral duty. Preparedness is both practical and ethical.
Jews have carried weapons, trained in combat, and prepared for threats for generations.
Many who historically avoided firearms have now recognized the need for proactive protection—extending the same principles into modern life.
This isn’t a post-October 7 phenomenon; it’s an extension of longstanding awareness.
“Reliance on others for safety is not always reliable, and history teaches this clearly.”
Evidence on the Ground: Clubs, Organizations, and Professionals
Jewish engagement in firearms is broad and growing.
Gun shops, ranges, and instructors across the country report surges in Jewish first-time buyers. These include professionals, families, women, and liberals—groups often assumed to avoid firearms.
Clubs and organizations focused on Jewish self-defense continue to grow, with new chapters appearing nationwide. People join for competence, confidence, and survival—not ideology.
Jewish participation also extends to the firearms industry. Many Jewish-owned companies produce some of the finest holsters, accessories, and defensive gear in the U.S. They are well-respected and reflect a broader commitment to responsible self-defense.
Longstanding Jewish Firearms Organizations
Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (JPFO) – Founded 1989, Bellevue, WA; advocacy linking gun rights to civil liberties and historical warnings against disarmament.
Bullets and Bagels – Southern California, 2013; apolitical/Zionist club; ~30% women; events emphasize safety and community.
Guns ‘N’ Moses – San Diego, CA; active since early 2010s; trains Jews of all experience levels; structured range sessions, safety instruction, mentoring, scenario-based training; led by Alex Dov.
Magen Am USA – West Coast; provides armed security and training for Jewish communities.
New York State Jewish Gun Club – Rockland County; permits, training, advocacy.
Jews Can Shoot – Founded 2013 by Doris Wise, Los Angeles; trained 400+ new shooters; now national, focused on advocacy, education, and challenging the “defenseless Jew” narrative.
Zelman Partisans – Online; decentralized successor to JPFO; strong 2A advocacy.
Post-October 7 Surge
Lox and Loaded – Launched after October 7; Jewish-owned; safety, community defense, inclusivity; 1,000+ members, 30+ chapters nationwide; ongoing expansion.
Others: Bagels and Bullets (Charleston, SC), High Value Training Academy (Northeast Ohio, led by Jeffrey Goldstein, an NRA-certified Jewish firearms instructor who offers discounted full-day courses and free small-group lessons to make training accessible and build proficiency within the Cleveland/Akron/Youngstown Jewish community), Cherev Gidon Israeli Tactical Training Academy, led by Yonatan Stern, providing Israeli tactical methods and self-defense training for Jewish communities, Gideon’s Guard in Texas, and various localized efforts.
Conclusion: Stop Broadcasting Defenselessness
When Jews publicly claim or imply that our people are unarmed, we perpetuate a false and dangerous narrative.
This isn’t about ideology—it’s about survival.
Influencers, podcasters, and journalists have a responsibility:
Stop framing defenselessness as the norm. Stop elevating ignorance as revelation.
“An armed, prepared Jew is not an anomaly. It is history. Scripture. Reality.”
Insisting otherwise puts lives at risk.

A buddy of mine is Jewish and a former Navy seal , he taught the local Jewish community where he was living in Kentucky how to shoot and how to shoot to kill and do all the proper maintenance on their guns and what guns worked best for their needs. He also guarded the synagogue during the high holidays when they were the most vulnerable.
Now he's back up in Michigan and starting the same program there.
A majority of Jews have been liberal (although I believe that number is decreasing) democrats. Liberal dems are strongly anti-gun ownership. However, the logic does not follow. Just because many Jews are liberal/dems does not mean that they are necessarily unarmed. With the surge of Jew hatred since the October 7 Hamas incursion into Israel, I have been urging Jews that were previously not gun owners, to buy guns, carry them and pursue competent training in shooting and other methods of self-defense. People, especially Jews, need to realize that they are their own “first responders”. Defense by law enforcement usually comes too late or not at all. Jews historically have been efficient competent warrior, and today, the weapon of choice is the firearm. Whether your gun of choice is a pistol (or revolver), a rifle or a shotgun, owning a couple of each (or more) is a wise decision. I urge all Jews, young and old, to arm themselves and to be always ready to engage those that would do harm.
